Meet The Photographers
Brown Bear Photography Series
There are some journeys that stay with you long after you’ve unpacked your camera bag and backed up the final memory card. My recent photography adventure to Finland in April was one of those unforgettable experiences an encounter shaped by patience, wild landscapes, and powerful moments with Europe’s largest land predator: the brown bear.
This incredible trip was expertly arranged by Paul Fowlie, whose knowledge, planning, and passion for wildlife photography made the entire experience seamless. Sharing this journey with a group of eight truly amazing photographers made it even more special. I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better group to experience this adventure with supportive, inspiring, and united by a shared passion for wildlife photography.
Why Finland for Brown Bear Photography?
Finland is a land of quiet beauty vast forests, mirrored wetlands, and a sense of remoteness that feels truly wild. The eastern regions near the Russian border offer one of the best opportunities in Europe to photograph brown bears ethically and responsibly.
This isn’t fast-paced wildlife photography. It’s about slowing down, observing, and letting nature unfold on its own terms. Every bear sighting is earned, never guaranteed and that’s what makes it so special.
Entering the Bear’s World
Each afternoon, our group made the journey into the forest, carrying our equipment to purpose-built wooden hides designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. Once inside, movement was minimal, voices disappeared, and time seemed to stretch.
For this part of the trip, we spent our time in the Swoop Hide, tucked deep into the wilderness. Long hours passed in quiet anticipation, broken only by birdsong and subtle movements in the forest.
Sharing this experience with such a great group made those hours meaningful. Even in silence, there was a shared excitement knowing that seven other photographers were nearby, all waiting with the same hope and focus.
And then it happens.
A dark shape appears at the forest edge. A huge presence steps into view. The arrival of a brown bear is nothing short of breathtaking quiet power, calm confidence, and complete dominance of its surroundings.
The Challenges of Photographing Brown Bears
Photographing brown bears in Finland is as demanding as it is rewarding. Light levels drop quickly during the long twilight hours, pushing camera settings to their limits. Shooting through small hide windows restricts movement, while long lenses demand absolute stability.
But the biggest challenge is mental remaining alert and patient for hours at a time. Bears may appear briefly, stay for a while, or not show at all. That uncertainty is part of the experience and one of the reasons each successful image feels so rewarding.
Part One of the video series captures this reality honestly showing not only the bears, but the waiting, the tension, and the moments in between.
Stories Behind the Images
Every image from this trip tells a story. Dominant bears asserting themselves, younger bears hesitating at the woodland edge, subtle interactions revealing hierarchy and behavior. These are moments that can’t be forced only observed.
Discussing these encounters back at base with such a talented group of photographers added another layer to the experience. Different perspectives, shared excitement, and mutual respect for the animals made the journey unforgettable.
