It was just past 7:00 PM when I arrived at The Den Hide, tucked deep within the Yorkshire countryside. The air was cool, the sky fading into a dusky blue, and I could feel the anticipation building as I hauled my camera gear through the woodland path. My infrared torch flickered to life, casting ghostly shadows on the trees as I made my way to the hide.
Inside, the silence was profound. The kind of silence that makes you aware of your own heartbeat. I settled in, adjusted my lenses, and waited.
Whispers in the Dark
Not long after darkness fell, the woodland beside the hide began to stir. A soft, wavering call broke the silence the unmistakable hoot of a tawny owl. Then another. They called to each other like ancient spirits of the forest, hidden in the canopy. I turned off my torch and listened, letting the sound wrap around me like a blanket.
The Ghost of the Meadow
Hours passed. Then, just as I was as one of the lights turned on, a pale shape glided silently across the meadow. A barn owl. It appeared as if conjured from the shadows, its wings catching the faint glow of the motion-triggered lights. It flew low, back and forth, hunting with precision.
The owl vanished as quickly as it came, swallowed by the night.
The Long Wait
The hours between midnight and dawn are the hardest. The cold creeps in, and fatigue begins to whisper doubts. But I stayed focused, watching, listening, hoping. The fox had been known to come in early and I was determined to see it this time.
The Moment I’d Been Waiting For
Then, at 4:15 AM, it happened.
A rustle. A shape. And there it was slipping into view like a shadow with eyes. The fox. Sleek, cautious, and utterly captivating. It paused in the lit area, sniffing the air, then moved with quiet confidence. I raised my camera and began shooting, the shutter clicking softly in the stillness.
I captured dozens of frames each one a testament to patience, preparation, and the wild magic of Yorkshire.
